Moving is such an exciting but also stressful time for you, your loved ones and even your pets- and you guys know my bully mix Ella is ALREADY super anxious! But, whether you’re moving just across town or across the country, there are a lot of moving parts that need to happen before the big day. With the chaos of cardboard boxes, packing tape, moving trucks and more, you might not even realize how it could be affecting not only yourself but your furry friends like my baby girl Ella as well. Below are a few tips to help make the transition a bit easier as well as safer for them.
- Familiarize Yourself With The Neighborhood: If you are able to view the neighborhood of where you’ll be moving before you actually take the leap, that would be a helpful tip not only for yourself but for your pet as well. Try taking a walk around the block to find a good route for you and your pets. When I’ve been scoping out new neighborhors- I’m always on the lookout if there are any signs or animals that are left unattended in their yards. Ella loves people but she doesn’t like meet dogs while on our marathon walks! Check how close the nearest dog park is from your home or any areas where your dog could run around for a few hours to burn off energy. This will also give you some comfort as well on your decision on if the home and neighborhood will be a good fit for everyone.
- Pack An Overnight Bag: Believe me when I say, even as organized as some of us are, you’ll always pack something in a box by mistake. It’s super simple to misplace any crucial items for you or your pet. Be sure to prepare an overnight bag with any items your pet may need on the actual day of moving or even a few days prior or after. Some items you might want to pick include food, treats, a water bowl, toys and medication. By having an overnight bag ready, you can take comfort in knowing anything your pet may need is in one convenient location. Don’t forget items for yourself too! I always try to make sure I have a shower curtain, TP, and face soap just in case!
- Update Your Microchip Information: No matter how far your move, make sure that your pets are microchipped and registered with a system before your big day. If they accidentally slip out during the process, you’ll have to get help from the experts. Just be sure to change their collar tag IDs and contact information online to your new home address.

Make them feel as at home as you will.
Take your time when it comes to moving and make sure that you, your family and furry friend is able to feel as comfortable as possible during this big transition. Double and triple check all the items you need for your family and your pet, find a new vet for your animal as soon as possible and make sure everyone adjusts accordingly in the weeks to come.
